ShipShape

If you’re battling weight issues, you’re not alone. Nearly 70% of those ages 20 and older in the United States are considered to be overweight or obese.

While staying fit can seem overwhelming at times, there is a solution. The Navy’s ShipShape Weight Management Program understands the unique challenges that you face, and we’re here to help. We can provide you with the tools and resources that you need to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, once and for all.

What makes the ShipShape Program different is that we take a holistic approach to weight management. The program focuses on nutrition, physical activity, and mindset. Our facilitators will provide the knowledge to help empower you to take charge of your weight management by:
  • Making healthy lifestyle choices
  • Surrounding yourself with supportive people
  • Setting goals and sticking to them
  • Managing stress
  • Identifying barriers and finding ways around them
  • Tracking your success
Group classes are held every Wednesday, 10 a.m. to noon. Participants don't have to attend the full two hours. Please contact us to enroll.

Tobacco & Nicotine Cessation

This is a four-session program that introduces proven strategies to help stop tobacco and nicotine use. The program is based on Behavior Change Theory techniques, public health strategies and evidence based medicine to address nicotine addiction as well as complementary strategies like mindfulness, yoga, and supportive digital apps.  Goals are to introduce achievable positive changes to support living a tobacco- and nicotine-free life.

Body Composition Analysis

The Wellness Center offers a professional body composition analysis with the Tanita scale. Tanita products are known for their medical accuracy and their wealth of different measurements they provide.

You will be provided a detailed and comprehensive report that includes:

  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Overall weight
  • Fat percentage
  • Fat mass
  • Muscle mass
  • Visceral fat rating
  • Bone mass/density
  • Body water percentage
  • Basal Metabolic Rate (calories needed to maintain your weight)
  • Your ideal weight (based on height, age, and gender)
  • Metabolic age (an overall physical health assessment in years)
Knowing your body composition helps give you a complete picture of your fitness level, allowing you to review and design an effective diet & exercise plan towards a healthier life.

Our events, programs and classes are published in a monthly calendar posted on our hospital Facebook main page, the Wellness Center's private Facebook group page and posted outside the Wellness Center Clinic located in the Fleet Recreation Center, 3rd deck, Room 323.

Smart Nutrition

Participants will learn:

  • The foundational information necessary to make better informed food choices by learning what calories are
  • Why quality calories are important
  • The thermic effect of food on metabolism
  • Necessary key components of nutrition
  • Get a real glimpse of portion sizes and serving sizes, how to calculate and estimate calories consumed
  • How to construct quality calories in meals, and
  • Making better choices when options are limited (in the galley, out at a restaurant, or just ran out of time and have to eat from the Konbini)

Mindfulness and Meditation for Focus, Stress & Resiliency

Learn the practice and power of mindfulness and meditation. Interested in beginning a path toward good health, well-being and resilience? The power of mindfulness helps focus awareness on your experiences in the present moment. This can help to calm the mind for those that struggle with stress, anxiety, and distraction.  It can help you connect and become more aware of your body. Join our weekly Mindfulness class to help start off the week with set intention, clear goals, and instill a sense of power to achieve success through positive awareness.

Mindful Movement

This class is designed to foster a deeper connection between mind and body. Instead of concentrating on working the body from the outside-in to improve mental acuity and focus, this practice emphasizes mindful intention guiding the body's movements. It teaches participants how to tune into the body's language to release stress and tension while contributing to mental clarity. This unique practice combines Mindfulness exercises, yoga poses and flows, with deep stretching exercises for a relaxing, liberating, and rejuvenated in-synch body and mind experience.
