Administrative Concerns
Shadowing or Completing Clinical Hours
We can only support shadowing requests for active duty service members at this time.
Volunteering at Naval Hospital Yokosuka
We’re extremely appreciative to all those interested in volunteering at our facility. If interested, we encourage you to get onboarded with the Red Cross as soon as arriving in Yokosuka. To begin, email the Red Cross at yokosuka@redcross.org.
The Red Cross requires volunteers to be stationed in Japan for a minimum of one year to pursue volunteer opportunities. This is due to the extended timeframe that is typically needed to complete required security and background checks. The process for volunteering in patient care areas can be lengthy, but having the necessary documents together can help make the process more efficient. This may include an updated resume, proof of citizenship and certifications. Timely communication is key during the onboarding process, please be prepared to check your email regularly and respond promptly to requests for additional information.
We encourage interested community members to stop by the Red Cross desk on the 1st floor, next to Family Medicine during normal business hours to learn more about volunteer opportunities.
Billing and Collections
Delays in receiving bills is often caused by incorrect patient information. We encourage patients to ensure their contact information (including email addresses, mailing address and phone numbers) are up to date in DEERS and verified with staff upon checking into appointments. Please ensure you bring identification and insurance information to all appointments when possible. For questions, please contact the Uniform Business Office at DSN 243-7090 or email at usn.uboyk@health.mil.
Parent/guardian Access to Children’s Health Records in MHS GENESIS
Please see the Pediatrics page for more information on how to establish or request access to the health records of your children. Please see the section on “Getting Dependents’ Medical Records” for information on parental access limitations for children over age 13.
Contacting Facilities listed on the Off-Base English-Speaking Facilities Document
We have recently reviewed and updated the list of healthcare providers serving foreign nationals in Japan. While we don’t endorse any specific facility or assume responsibility or liability for the professional ability, reputation of, or financial indebtedness incurred by the individual, we do provide a list of facilities: List of Healthcare Providers Serving Foreign Nationals in Japan.
Front desk staff may or may not speak English. The TRICARE Overseas Program contractor, International SOS, is an additional resource for those seeking off-base health care.
We ask that DOD-affiliated personnel please respect the individual clinic and facility cancellation policies when schedule changes occur. Thank you.
Patient Communications and Customer Service
Community members noted inconsistencies across hospital departments when it comes to policies, procedures, and a general lack of customer service. Additionally, a concern was brought forth regarding the hospital’s overreliance on Facebook when communicating with the public.
We are working internally to review our current practices, which includes updating our website and reinforcing the importance of customer service amongst our staff. We appreciate hearing from the community, please continue to tell us how we are doing by submitting an ICE comment here.
